Reciting an oath of dedication amidst preceptors and loved ones, the 19 students who comprise UPMC Hamot’s School of Anesthesia Class of 2025 accepted their white coats on Saturday, August 26, 2023. This event – the first of its kind for the SOA – marks the students’ transition from didactic coursework to full-time clinical training. Students in this cohort have been enrolled in the DNP program since May 2022, with their first two semesters completed entirely online, and had already earned 21 credits by the time they arrived for in-person didactic and clinical work on January 3, 2023.
The Class of 2025 is the School of Anesthesia’s first to work towards their Doctor of Nursing Practice, or DNP, upon program completion. The School of Anesthesia was established at Hamot Hospital in 1965. The program is bolstered by a longstanding affiliation with Gannon University’s Villa Maria School of Nursing, which delivers advanced nursing and healthcare courses to students concurrently with their anesthesia-specific coursework here at UPMC Hamot.
